PCC writes letter to Commissioner UNHCR on impartial interpreters

Karachi: October 8, 2015. (PCP) Pakistan Christian Congress PCC issues contents of an open letter to Commissioner UNHCR to appoint impartial interpreters during interviews of Pakistani Christian Asylum seekers in Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

The Commissioner UNHCR,

Geneva, Switzerland.

Request to appoint impartial Interpreters for Pakistani Christian Asylum Seekers Interviews in UNHCR offices in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

Sir,

I wish to draw your kind attention on incidents of partiality of Muslim interpreters hired by UNHCR offices in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Malaysia from Pakistan to interpret interviews of Pakistani Christian Asylum seeker’s cases registered with UNHCR offices in respective states.

It will be surprising to note by your honor that Pakistani Christian Asylum Seekers who can understand and speak English language are barred by UNHCR officers who record interview and insist to speak in Urdu that UNHCR hired Pakistani Muslim may perform duty of interpreter.

Kindly note that in one interview of a Pakistani Christian Pastor who is asylum seeker: the UNHCR interview officer forces Pastor to remove his Clerical Collar to take his photograph while UNHCR officer around world never insists Muslims with Beard to cut his bear that his neck may be clear in photograph when only Clerical Collar seems hindrance to take neck photo.

Moreover, the Pakistani Muslim interpreters hired by UNHCR to conduct interview of Pakistani Christian Asylum seekers are given complete excess to data of Pakistani Christian Asylum seekers which they are doubted to compromise with government of Islamic Republic of Pakistan officers in Islamabad which negates rules and norms of UNHCR.

There are dozens of complaint by Pakistani Christian Asylum seekers that Pakistani Muslim Interpreters not truly and factually conveyed contents of their interview to UNHCR officers on which their cases were denied.

I wish to bring in your kind notice that Pakistani Christian Asylum seekers who wait for interviews for years with UNHCR offices when get a chance to express their grievances before UNHCR officer then on Pakistani Muslim changes the facts during interpretation.

Therefore, we request your honor to appoint impartial Interpreters in UNHCR offices in Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

Thanks.
